The four-minute bedroom check
Walk in like a stranger. Each check has a free fix first; buy something only if the free fix doesn't cut it.
1. Dark
Lights off, eyes adjusted: can you see your hand? Free: tape over standby lights, move the phone, close the curtain gap.
Blackout curtains or a blackout blind
Any well-reviewed thermal blackout curtain
Why: Early light is one of the most common reasons Night-Wakers can't get back to sleep. Blocking it fixes the whole room, not just your eyes.
How to use it: Measure the window and add overlap on every side. Light leaks round the edges, not through the fabric.
The honest downside: Gaps at the sides and top undo most of the benefit; a curtain rail that wraps round, or a blind fitted inside the frame, helps.

A contoured eye mask
Manta Sleep (or any contoured mask)
Why: Cupped eye pads that don't press on your eyes, adjustable so light doesn't leak in around the nose. The cheapest fix for early light or a partner's reading lamp.
How to use it: Give it three or four nights; it feels odd at first.
The honest downside: Manta's cups can shift if you sleep on your side. Cheaper contoured masks work well for most people.

2. Quiet
Steady noise is fine; sudden noise wakes you. Free: a fan, a draught-stopper on the door.
A white-noise machine
Yogasleep Dohm Classic
Why: A real fan in a dome, so the sound never loops or clicks. It has been the category standard since 1962. Steady sound masks the sudden noises (car doors, heating, a partner) that pull you out of deep sleep.
How to use it: Put it between you and the noise, not by your head. Start quiet.
The honest downside: Only one kind of sound, and it needs a socket. If you want more sounds, a digital machine like the LectroFan does more, but some people hear the loop.

Earplugs
Foam (cheapest, most effective) or reusable silicone (most comfortable)
Why: For a snoring partner or a noisy street, nothing beats them for the money.
How to use it: Roll foam plugs thin, pull your ear up and back, hold them in place for 20 seconds while they expand.
The honest downside: Side sleepers can find them uncomfortable. You might not hear an alarm, so use a vibrating one or light.

3. Cool
Most guidance lands around 16-19°C (60-67°F). Free: crack a window, lighter duvet, cotton sheets. Cotton percale or linen sheets sleep cooler than polyester or flannel if you replace them anyway.
4. The surface
Wake stiff? Sleep better in hotels? A dip in the middle? Free: rotate the mattress, check the pillow height.
A pillow matched to how you sleep
Emma adjustable foam pillow (layers you can remove)
Why: Your neck should stay straight in your usual position. An adjustable pillow lets you fix the height at home instead of guessing in a shop.
How to use it: Side sleepers need the most height, back sleepers medium, front sleepers the least.
The honest downside: Foam runs warmer than feather or down, and a new pillow can take a week to feel normal.
Emma doesn't list New Zealand as a delivery country. Check their site before ordering.
